Who is at Risk for Hypothyroidism?
Adults of all ages are at risk of being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, especially women over the age of 45. Often we are also less likely to notice the symptoms of hypothyroidism, seeing as they are often mistaken for natural signs of aging.
What are the Symptoms of Hypothyroidism?
Early signs of hypothyroidism are unfortunately often mistaken for natural symptoms that come with peri-menopause & meno-pause. The earliest indicators of Hypothyroidism are usually a lack of energy, depression, and mood swings, but you should be on the lookout for any of these other symptoms too:
- Hair loss
- Weight gain
- Cold hands and feet
- Slowness of thought
- Puffy facial swelling
- Fluid retention
- Dry skin
- Brittle nails
- Irregular menstrual cycles
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to not simply attribute them to the aging process. If you are unsure of why you may be experiencing any of these symptoms, seek the advice of an Integrative Clinic.
How can I get Tested for Hypothyroidism?
The most common method to test for Hypothyroidism is a blood test.
TSH Test- The thyroid-stimulating hormone test is a blood test that measures the amount of T4 (thyroxine) that the thyroid is being signaled to make. If this test results in abnormally high amounts of TSH, You could have hypothyroidism.
T4 Test- You can find out how your thyroid is functioning by having a T4 or T4 index blood test done. These tests are done in combination with a TSH test and measure the amount of thyroxine your thyroid is producing. If your thyroid is producing insufficient levels of thyroxine, there’s a chance you could have hypothyroidism.
